Buyer/Certified Appraisals
1) I buy high end Asian art and antiques, as well as high end Western art, gold, sterling silver and coins. 2) I offer $25.00 photographic assessments of items. 3) I offer full blown USPAP compliant Certified Appraisals. See below for details on these services.
Our Services Offered
1) Do I Buy Items? If you want to offer your item(s) for sale to me you may not ask for my advice as an appraiser because this excludes me from buying any of them, as I abide strictly by the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practices (USPAP). I will need to see good photograph first (see 4 below). If I am going to consider buying them, then I will need to see them in person before I am willing to commit to buying anything. 2) Because real certified appraisals are generally not cheap, I now offer, for only $25.00 per piece, very inexpensive photographic assessments in which I review your item(s) by photograph. I will go through the images and provide an estimated time that will be required for the appraisal, as well as my suggestion if you should or should not consider going forward with the appraisal process on each piece. These fees are non-refundable. However, if you choose to sign a contract and submit the full advanced retainer fee within 30 day of my emailed photographic assessment date to initiate the appraisal process, then any item(s) contracted for will have their $25.00 fee(s) credited towards the advanced retainer fee, non-contracted pieces will not be credited. 3) If you want a USPAP compliant Certified Appraisal, identification, culling of your collection, etc., then you have found the right place, as that is exactly what I do. I charge by the hour on a trending discount based on the number of pieces that you have (see rate list below). If you want an estimate of the potential time and thus cost involved in doing an appraisal, then you will need to send me detailed photographs of each piece. If instead you would like to just go ahead and start the appraisal process that is fine too. I will need to know how many pieces you want examined and will estimate an average of 1 hours per piece for the advanced retainer fee. These estimates are not binding, only a guide to help you determine if you should go forward any further or not. The rates range from a high of $150.00 per hour for 1 piece down to $95.00 per hour if there are 47 or more items. All advanced retainer fees, time for work completed beyond the advanced retainer fees, expenses, subcontracted services, etc... are non-refundable and due upon billing. Periodic billings will be mailed out and are due upon receipt. Trending discount, hourly rate list: 1 piece, $150.00/hour; 2 pieces, $148.50/hr;

46, $95.43; 47, $95.00; (48, 59, 50, 51... $95.00). Generally items will be eliminated as I examine them, so the overall cost will go down, but this is not a rule as some items can be very complex to examine. Expect that I will “break your heart” on a number of pieces that you think will be important or valuable, and I find they are not during the process. Between 60% and 90% of the items people have me undertake the appraisal process on end up not being worth preparing a certified appraisal report for and if this is the case I will inform you of this as soon as it is clear to me.
For smaller/easier appraisal jobs, payment of the estimated retainer fee must be paid in full and the properly filled out and signed contracts must be completed before the examination will begin. For larger and/or more difficult appraisals a 50% retainer fee based on the estimated time must be paid and properly signed contracts are required before the examination will begin. Any outstanding balance for the work must be paid before any information is released. If you are local and you require me to come to your location to examine your item(s) there is a $1.00 per mile fee for the round trip distance that must be included in the retainer based on the Mapquest distance starting from 1235 Yale Place, Minneapolis, MN 55403 and ending at your address. For longer trips, the client is also responsible for any cost of food and lodging that may be required and this will need to be discussed. A billing for any subcontracted services, such as translations, testing, etc. will be mailed out immediately and will be due upon receipt. If you are far enough away for a flight, all travel expenses must be taken care of by the client and a prepaid stipend must be provided. All fees, expenses, costs, subcontracted services, etc. must be paid in full before any information will be released. 4) Photographs required: This is one of the most important bits of information I need in order to help you most efficiently.
The work will either not start, or take longer if I do not receive very clearly taken, and well-lit
photos, plus, Gregory C. Brown Certified Appraisals does not offer refunds once photos are received and/or work begins. Even Slightly blurry image will require me to take extra time. If you need to get help from a family member or friend to get clear images, please do that first. I will need all of the following images: Several “overall” images from each direction of each entire piece; Many images from various angles; Images of the tops and bottoms; Lid tops and insides; Details of the designs and interesting features; Any and all damage; All calligraphy, writing and stamps; Anything else you think is important to show me. Again, and this is very important, if the photos are at all blurry, poorly lit or there are too few of them to show me the entire piece, estimates of the time for the appraisal process will be higher and less accurate. Please send the images to: gcbrownphotos@gmail.com. 5) Payments may be made by Paypal (which accepts credit cards) via browntrout@yahoo.com. All payment fees are the responsibility of the customer and work will not begin if they have been deducted from the total due. Feel free to email me with any questions.
