This is a handsome Ming to Early Qing dynasty plate dedicated to Guan-Di. It has a lovely variegated dark green/turquoise glaze and six Chinese characters that roughly translate to “North Grass Hut – Dish for Guan-Di” as stated on the back by a previous owner. (That translation has been verified with an expert in Chinese calligraphy).

This is a fine blanc de chine figure of the Goddess of Mercy, Kwan Yin (also known as Guanyin, Kwanyin). She carries a ruyi scepter in her left hand and a basket with fish in her right hand. The figure stands on a group of stylized waves. It comes from the fine artisanship of this special tradition of Chinese porcelain, made in Dehua City, Fujian Province, China. This is a lovely little round or paste or cosmetic box that has been made of very thin strips of a wood or vegetable material and tightly woven to form the box and the lid. We think the material is a probably thin bamboo strip – but it could be made of some raffia or reed type plant. The box measures 2 5/8” diameter and is 1 Ό” high to the top of the slightly domed lid.

This is a zitan inkpaste box. These are in principle not rare: but ones in such fine condition are virtually impossible to buy in Beijing now. It is carved to look like a section of a tree trunk. The nodes of the tree, the little branches on the bottom are very realistically carved. It measures 3" long by 2 1/4" wide by 1 5/8" high and is in superb condition. There is a label on the inside that identifies the piece as having been a part of the Jizhen Zhai Collection.(See last para ...click for details

A very finely carved bamboo wrist rest as used in the scholar's studio to protect the item he is painting from having the ink smear. The design on this piece is a fascinating picture of Kwanyin riding on the back of a fierce fire breathing animal - possibly a shi shi (although they are usually shown as more benign). The design is all hand carved.
