$1,750.00

This is a handsome Korean white porcelain vase made with a narrow flared neck and glazed in a bright white glaze down to the footed base. Neither the short foot nor the bottom of the vase is glazed – they show the pale buff clay underneath. You can see the traces of the potter’s fingers as the potting wheel was turned. The vase is stoutly potted with the pear-shaped body rising from the wedge-cut foot encircling the countersunk base and rising to the tall neck which is surmounted by the slightly ...click for details

This is a handsome splotchy dark chocolate brown globe shaped vase with a wide opening and a white glaze on the inside. The base is also a white glaze. The brown glaze has some small adhered pieces of grit from the kiln on the sides and base. The vase measures 3 ¾’ high and is 4 ½” diameter at its widest. We date it to the mid to late 19th century and believe it to be of Korean origin, Choson (Joseon) dynasty.

This is a very unusual vase. The outer shell appears to be a dark brown bronze colored enamel or thick lacquer overlay. The coating then has a mother of pearl – aogi – inlaid scene. When you look inside the vase it is clear that the vase is bronze metal. However, on the base there are two chips on the rim that look like the underlay is ceramic. Our best guess is that the piece was first cast as a bronze vase - then a layer of ceramic was baked on that would hold the thick enamel coating. That wo ...click for details
