This is a nicely carved wooden netsuke of one of the most beloved of the Japanese Household Gods – Hotei. He is seen sitting down and fanning himself with a fan held in his right hand. The netsuke measures 1 ½” high by 1 3/8” wide by 1 1/8” deep. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks.

The Netsuke is signed "Gyokusho&q ...click for details

This is an interesting modern Chinese wooden netsuke depicting Daikoku about to hammer on the head of a mouse with his large mallet. Since Daikoku is usually shown as a happy figure – and his bag is always surrounded by mice or rats – perhaps he is finally fed up with the mice eating bales of rice and is getting ready to take our his wrath on one of them.

The Netsuke is signed “Gyokuseki", a very famous Japanese netsuke carver. However, it is a modern Chinese netsuke with a false signature. Apparently these Chinese netsukes of many different subjects – and bearing fake names of famous Japanese carvers - are showing up in the market in increasing numbers.

Nonetheless, this modern netsuke ...click for details

This is an extremely intricately carved piece that shows a hut surround by tall trees. On a path approaching the hut, there are tiny carved figures of three men carrying a woman in a palanquin – a small dog follows the procession.

We were fooled for a long time that this was made of ivory. On closer inspection with a ten power loupe, we h ...click for details

This is a pottery brush rest for the scholars desk made in the shape of five mountain peaks with flowers in low relief on the surface. A brush rest refers to the object used to hold the brush when one temporarily stops painting or writing, so that the wet brush will not smear other things. The piece is in a semi- circular form to that it will stand solidly when the brushes are place on it. The piece is glazed with a brilliant blue/purple color that is quite dynamic. The base is unglazed and has ...click for details

This is a delightful bamboo carving of a mother monkey and her two small babies. One of the tiny monkeys rests at the mother's feet and her hand reached down protectively. The other is clinging to its mother's left shoulder and back. The expression on the mother monkeys face is priceless. It has the appearance so typical of all mothers of small children -loving - yet exasperated with their behavior.

This is a porcelain vase with an overglaze painting of groups of three court figures on the sides in two reserves. These are separated by vertical bands of elaborately drawn floral designs. The color of the design is a copper orange paint – it is worn in some small areas. The vase measures 4 3/8” high and is 2 ¼” diameter at the widest. It is in generally good condition with the exception of those small areas where the paint has rubbed off. We date it to the first half of the 20th century.
