A very highly detailed okimono (figurine) of a seated sage executed in pot metal with bronze plating. Every detail of his robe - face - beard - front and back is very finely carved. The piece measures 2 1/2" wide by 2 1/2" high by 2" deep. It is in excellent condition with some small areas where the bronze plating has worn away over the years. We date it to the late Meiji to Taisho era, circa 1900-1925 - however it is quite possible from the patina that it is older than that.

This is a nice 20th century metal toy samurai sword that would be presented to a boy on Boys Day – traditionally held on March 3rd. The sword was intended to imbue in the boy a sense of honor and strength as shown by the samurai of old. This miniature sword is made of metal and is intricately made with simulated sharks skin handle, a tiny sword guard (tsuba) and a decorated scabbard with a relief dragon going down the side. The sword itself is thin steel. The entire combination measures 12 ¼ “ ...click for details

$100.00

At the turn of the 20th century - late Meiji to very early Showa period - there was a department store in Boston named Vantines or Vanteens. The store had a large trade in items from the Far East - particularly Japan - as a result of the craze for the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta "The Mikado" and the opera "Madame Butterfly". This bronze alloy incense burner - koro - was molded in the shape of a samurai's helmet. It is in good condition with tell-tail smoke on the insi ...click for details

A cast iron scroll weight in the shape of a rooster looking backwards. It almost looks as if it could have been designed by Picasso. We believe it to be of Japanese origin and dating from the mid 20th century. Measures 2 5/8" long by 2 5/8" high by 1 1/2" thick. A unique item to hold down your scroll - or that pile of bills on your desk ~
