$495.00

A finely thrown and molded pottery candlestick in the shape of woman with a basket on her head – quite possibly a depiction of an Ainu woman. The basket acts as the holder for the metal pricket that holds the candle and also doubles as a drip pan for the melted wax. Candlesticks in the shape of people enjoyed a popularity in the late Edo and early Meiji period. This one is clearly wheel thrown as evidenced by the string cut marks on the base where the piece was cut from the potter’s wheel - th ...click for details

$395.00

This is an interesting flower vase of Japanese Shigaraki ware with an unusual feature of an imbedded metal ring for hanging the vase. The sagging top does not appear to be a kiln mistake but a planned part of the form. The only decoration on the vase is a row of wide cross hatching inside two incised rings at the shoulder of the piece. The pottery known as Shigaraki-yaki comes from Shigaraki Town and its surrounding area in the south of Shiga Prefecture. It has a long history and commercial pott ...click for details

A very striking Khmer lime-pot or jarlet molded in the shape of an elephant with distinctly recognizable trunk, ears and tail. The piece was then glazed in a dark chocolate brown glaze down to the top of the raised foot – which was then left unglazed showing the grayish tan natural clay underneath. We date this early example of Southeast Asian pottery to the 12th-13th century, the Khmer Cambodia period of Angkor Wat to the Bayon period. The item piece measures 3" high and is 3 5/8" lo ...click for details

A fine and unusual Hirado kogo (covered small covered box)in the shape of an old man or sage riding on the back of a large fish crane. It could be one example of the Household God, Ebisu. Excellent details as are always found in Hirado porcelain pieces- note the feathers, the eyes and the old man's garment. The kogo is mostly white with highlights of blue on the cap and brown on the back belt to his robe. Note how the edge at the base of the piece exhibits the touch of rust colored iron sh ...click for details

This small teapot has one of the most unusual shapes we have ever seen in a Satsuma teapot - an offset square with twisted rope handle. The piece measures 2 3/4" high and is 2 3/4" square at the top (exclusive of the handle)by 2" square at the base. The design makes extensive use of the much admired gosu blue and depicts a temple in a garden that is surrounded by a wall that has a design of the Buddhist wheel. The design strongly suggests that it might have been made for a Tibetan ...click for details
