$495.00 the pair

Two magnificent sake cups (guinomi.) One by a Mashiko potter, another by one of the best Taiwanese artist studios—Tien-Guan-Yao. The vintage Mashiko one is done in traditional ash glaze on brown stoneware, very wabi-sabi. Beautiful green ash glaze dripped and pooled on the bottom of the cup, signature style of Kamoda Shoji. Measured H 2.25”, D 3.5”. There are two very small crazed areas which were repaired, water proofed and not in the least noticeable. This one is not signed so we can’t be sure ...click for details

$350.00

A fine handled cup from the famous Nanking Cargo, still bearing the paper label from the 1986 auction by Christie’s Amsterdam. The cup is a pure white porcelain and measures 2 3/4" high x 2 5/8 diameter (exclusive of the handle). One tiny rim frit which can be seen clearly in the photos. The pieces date from 1751 and before, when the Dutch East India Company’s ship The Geldermalsen sank off Batavia on January 3 1752. For a historical survey of the cargo, and the story of its recovery, see ...click for details

$525.00

A lovely Bizen saikumono (carved figure) of the Japanese Goddess of Mercy, Kannon. Kannon stands with her arms folded under her robes and holding a scroll as she looks down with a contemplative and serene expression. The figure dates from the late Meiji period and stands 9 7/8" high by 3 1/4" wide and 3" deep. Excellent condition with some very small chipping to the toes on both feet. There is a two character impressed mark on the lower back portion of the robe.Bizen ware is wel ...click for details

$295.00

A very unusual Fukagawa plate with a design of two cranes on a speckled blue background. The design is formed in the negative by making the cranes of a resist material and then spraying the top of the plate with a fine mist of blue glaze before the final glazing. The plate has three holes in the bottom footrim - designed to facilitate hanging the piece as a decoration. Based on that feature and the lack of any firing spurs, we believe this plate dates from the mid Showa period - sometime between ...click for details

A nicely decorated bowl from Kyoto area in the style of Ogata Kenzan and carrying a late variation copy of the Kenzan signature on one side. The bowl is decorated in bright overglaze enamels on all sides with stylized figures of five seated lohans (holy men) - there is also one in the center of the inside of the bowl. The base glaze is a fine tan crackle glaze - the foot is unglazed. Excellent condition - no chips, cracks of restorations. The bowl measures 5 3/8" diameter at the shoulder be ...click for details

$1,000.00

A very fine and quite rare Hirado standing figure of a tree trunk with a white dove perched at the top. We think that the tree is a plum tree as the white blossoms closely resemble the prunus flowers commonly found in Japanese depictions of the "three friends of winter" - plum, pine and bamboo. One of the blossoms has full opened and the others are in various stages of budding and opening. Amazingly, only two of the tiny buds has been broken off - the normal fate of Hirado figurines wi ...click for details

$425.00

A fine molded pottery figure of Daruma in a seated position staring out at the world with a very intense and rivetting look on his face. We think the piece might be Bizen pottery - however, it does not have the light tan scattering of pale spots one normally associates with Bizen. Either way, it is a well executed piece with superb presence. Measures 5 1/8" tall bu 4 3/8" wide x 3 5/8" deep. Excellent condition - there is one small old chip on the base just under the left knee o ...click for details

$295.00

A very appealing wooden carving of Daruma. It is fairly rare to find these carvings signed - in this case the carving is clearly signed with an incised signature that says "Yoshi-Mune"(first word, Yoshi, second word Mune). The carving measures 6 1/8" high x 3 1/2" wide x 2 5/8" deep. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks or restorations. In Japan the word daruma, derived from the Sanskrit word "dharma," originally referred to Bodhidharma, the fo ...click for details

$295.00

A very attractive Kutani dish in the shape of a fish - with the body done in a scalloped fan shape and a strong design of a fierce shi shi chasing the sacred pearl. The tail of the fish is decorated in a nishidike brocade design in the traditional Kutani rust orange and green. Of the base is a simple design of four flames in the rust orange. The dish does not carry the usual Kutani (nine mountain) Kanji mark - however, the palette of colors is clearly that if the Kutani potters. The dish measur ...click for details
