A dynamic little Chinese pottery joss stick holder in the shape of a reclining kylin. This little fellow has great personality with his bulging eyes and his open mouth with lolling tongue in his mouth. Looks as if he is about to bark at someone - assuming that Kylin's do bark ? He measures 2 1/2" tall and is 3 1/2" long x 2 1/2" wide. Glazed in a tannish glaze, the figure is in excellent condition with no nicks or chips. Dates from mid to late 19th century.

$450.00

A lovely studio porcelain dish by Genroku Tominaga (1859-1920) with a handsome ho-o bird surrounded by the kiri mon - emblems of the Empress. According to information on the "Imari.com" web site, Tominaga was an important figure in the Japanese porcelain world of his time. He began the Genroku Studio during the Meiji period with the goal of producing porcelain ware of the highest quality in the traditional manner of Imari Porcelain in the 18th century. Toward the end of Fe ...click for details

This is an early - circa 1820 -1868 - Shino serving dish with a thick white glaze which is crackled over a subtle and elegant iron oxide pattern of grasses and fiddle head ferns. The form is a slightly rounded square with indentations at the four corners. Impressed mark at the recessed base. Height, 2 1/4in. Diameter, 4in. Very good condition - no cracks or repairs, a tiny flake at rim. Some dirt at the base.

$495.00

An excellent Meiji period ivory netsuke of Hyottoko. Hyottoko is the name of a comic character in Kyogen plays whose mask is distorted and grotesque. In this fine mask netsuke, the mouth is twisted to the right and the one eye is shut as if to ward off trouble. A very clever aspect of this netsuke is the way the carver used the upturned mouth and the left nostril to form the himotoshi holes. Fine patina marks this early elephant ivory netsuke - excellent condition. Measur ...click for details

$395.00

Fascinating wooden carving of a Japanese Buddhist monk or priest standing on a lotus base on top of a gilded cylindrical base. The monk has a superbly expressive face - both wise and tranquil. The hands and the toes are missing but the power of the piece remains. The figure stands 6 1/4" high , without the mandala, with the separate mandala it is 7" tall. The mandala is a separate pieces that fits into a slot on the base. The base itself is 5 3/4" tall - so the total piece measure ...click for details

$395.00

Very handsome Japanese studio pottery tall cylindrical vase - decorated in muted vertical stripes of medium blue and olive green - over a buff color ground that has dappling of darker tan. Signed with an incised signature on the base. This fine piece could date anywhere between 1920 and 1960 - I lean toward an earlier date. Excellent condition with no chips, nicks or problems. The difference in colors that can be seen in the photos was caused by different lighting conditions - I took two photos ...click for details

This is the third in the series of four fine Yi Xing teapots that we recently acquired. This one is a another dark chocolate brown teapot with low relief figures - this time of two tao tsai masks on the two sides of the main body. The teapot measures 6" from the tip of the spout to the end of the handle; is 3 3/4" high to the top of the finial and is 4" diameter at the waist. Marked with an impressed mark on the inside of the teapot lid and with another more complex mark o ...click for details

$295.00

A handsome little tea jar decorated with a traditional Samurai wave pattern design in handpainted slip trailing decoration, under the glaze. Alternatively, the design could be a highly stylized interpretation of the traditional "floating wheel" design that dates back to the 12th century. That motif derives from the early practice of soaking the wheels for bullock carts in the Kamo River in Kyoto; wheels thus treated were stronger and held their shape longer. The design went out of fas ...click for details

A very interesting pair of great cloisonne art deco vases - the combination of ginbari and standard cloissone is in a pattern that very much resembles a peacock feather - one of the classic art deco motifs. Both are 5" tall and 2 1/2" diameter at the waist - tapering to 1 3/8" diameter at the foot. They are both in generally fine condition with normal patina to the mounts - however, one has a 3/8" ding in the shoulder (shown clearly in Photo # 4)- the other has no chips or ...click for details
