This is a lid to what have been a very large jar. Usually, we would not be listing a piece that is part of another larger item; however, this lid is so nice that it stands alone as a decoration. Atop the lid is a very finely carved golden shi shi temple dog. On the four side are detailed paintings of Shinto priests engaged in conversations, reading and other activities. A different shaped small Japanese Satsuma vase in a tapered hexagonal shape. The sides are decorated with falling leaves in rust and green colors – all on a the gosu blue ground that is so sought after by collectors of Satsuma. The vase measures 3 ¾” high by 1 ¾” diameter at the shoulder. There is a small chip on the rim – otherwise in good condition. We date the vase to the late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1850-1880s.

A lovely Satsuma vase from the Kinkozan pottery studio – shaped like a sack that has been gathered at the top and tied loosely by a simulated golden cord with a large bow with tassels. The body of the bowl is decorated with a profusion of flowers – mostly chrysanthemums – with a couple of birds flying overhead. The gathered top has small floral sprays in each fold. An elaborated decorated small Japanese Satsuma vase formed in the shape of a small handlded bucket. It is decorated with six reserves - groups of court ladies on two sides - and one each of a court lady and a priest on the sides of the handles. A Japanese Kutani ware sake cup with a very unusual shape. The cup has three lobes and is on a small foot. The design is that of maples leaves in the Fall.It measures 2 3/4" diameter and is 1 7/8" high. The impressed mark on the base reads "Kutani Kosen" - this Kutani-ware kiln and shop has been open since 1870. Dates to the late Meiji period, circa 1890-1915. Excellent condition.

A fine Japanese Kyoto Kiyomizu-yake covered bowl by the artist known as Tosa, early Meiji period, circa 1870-1895. Tosa was a potter who lived in Gosjosaka and learned his art from the Rokubei Family. He follows typical Kiyomizu style and his work shows taste and originality. A handsome Japanese Satsuma vase with extensive use of gosu blue in the design. On two sides there is a motif of plum (prunus) blossoms done in thick gold, red and gosu blue enamels with a blue trunk and limbs.
