This is a fascinating Japanese elephant ivory carving (okimono) from the famed Tokyo school of ivory carving. It is of a seated priest holding up a bowl with what appears to be smoky incense pouring out of the bowl. The priest has a long staff across his body that is highlighted by four rings. The detail on the priest’s robes, face, feet and body are extremely well executed. The priest sits on a rocky ledge as he looks upward toward the bowl being held high by his left hand. A late 19th century Japanese ivory kogo (covered box for incense during tea ceremony) with incised design of three monkeys – the incised design then filled with sumi ink. Two of the monkeys are chasing each other around the rim of the kogo – whilst in the center is a close-up of a monkey’s face. The kogo is made out of beautiful even-grained ivory, great patina, in excellent condition - no cracks, chips or repairs. It measures 2 5/8” diameter and is 1 ˝” deep. A Japanese bone ivory jarlet with an inscribed design of cranes standing in a clump of irises with their long leaves. The lid of the jarlet has a deep relief carving of a mum. The jarlet measures 2" high and is 1 1/2" diameter. We date the piece to the late Meiji period. Excellent condition.
