This is a really wonderful Japanese boxwood okimono of a turtle on a round base. This turtle may be a version of the long tailed turtle known as the Minogame - the turtle that lives 1000 years - note the tail hanging down the back of the round pedestal. The figure is finely carved with very detailed work on the face, the carapace, the body and the legs. The pedestal is carved with a single Kanji character in the front and scrolling vines on the sides. The piece measures 3 3/4" high by 3 1/4 ...click for details

Fine early bokuto sagemono (known as a doctors sword) dating from the Edo period, circa 1750-1860. A bokuto was a simulated sword made of wood. In ancient Japan only Samurai were allowed to wear a real sword. Therefore non-samurais (doctors, merchants, etc.) used the bokuto. We surmise that in the dark, robbers who were thinking of accosting doctors or businessmen going about their rounds might have been scared off when the saw the shape of the bokuto in the dark. The piece is possibly of Ainu ...click for details

Japanese Boxwood Okimono of a young woman looking in her mirror. Beautiful detail - a lovely face and fine detailing to her kimono and sash. The mirror she holds is removable - amazing that it is still with the piece and not lost. Measures 4 ½" high x 3 ¾' wide x 3 ¾" deep. Excellent condition except for the crack in the front of the piece just below the sash. The crack was there when I obtained the piece eight years ago and has never gotten any wider. Believed to date from the lat ...click for details

$350.00

Very handsome carved wood figure of a Japanese priest - I believe a Shinto priest as opposed to Buddhist. Covered with a light gesso glaze - the piece stands 11" tall x 3 1/2" wide x 3" deep. The priest holds a scepter in one hand and a round object in the left hand. The stand measures 1" high x 6 1/4" wide x 4 3/4" deep. Good condition with some chipping and rubbing to the gesso - but still retains a wonderfully serene presence. Dates from late Edo to early Meiji p ...click for details
