This is one of the most popular prints from the series “One Hundred Aspects of the Moon”(1885-1892) by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. First printed in November of 1886, the print portrays Jun Wukong (Songoku in Japanese) is the immortal monkey who accompanied the priest Tripitaka on his journey from China to India in the 7th century to collect Buddhist scriptures. A Japanese diptych by Bairei,Kono(1844-1895). The print depicts two butterflies done in blacks and grays – flying over two pink lily blossoms with full stem and leaves. It is in very good condition with light wrinkles and is a protected by a clear plastic wrap over the black mounting mat paperboard. The print has a three character mark at the top right that translates to “"Yuri Ni Cho"(Lily and Butterfly). This one of the nicest prints in the famous series “One Hundred Aspects of the Moon” (1885-1892)by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. It is entitled “A Fox Admires Her Reflection on a Moonlit Night” and is also called “Full moon in Mushasi”, 1890. This is a late Edo to early Meiji otsu-e of an ogre – the ONI – bearing a mallet. The story behind the mallet carrying oni follows. There is extensive calligraphy on the print – not translated. The print measures 13 ¾” by 9 3/8” and is in fine shape – the staining on the lower portion of the mat does not extend to the print itself. We date it to circa 1850-1879. It is framed in a black wooden frame – well worn.

The unusual aspect of the print is that there is an over-painting in white wash or watercolor that highlights the faces, collars, hands, feet and some details in the kimonos.
