A great print from 1994-1995 with a fine composition of a raku pottery tea bowl (chawan under a calligraphic Zen circle – all done on a faint silver circle which has been cut out and pasted to the backing mat. The print measures 1- ¾” by 9 ½” and is edition 38/211 – and is pencil signed, numbered and titled by the artist – it bears his red seal in the lower left corner. Her eyes are closed in a contemplative expression - to her right the profile is framed in draped cloths at top and side with leaves at the bottom. Mint condition – never framed. It has a date of 1977. The print measures 16 1/2" by 14 1/4" – image size is 9 3/4" by 9 3/4". Saito Kaoru lives in Kanagawa Prefecture, where he was born. Hashiguchi Goyo (1881-1921) was one to the foremost Japanese print makers of the early 20th century. The print depicts a bijen-ga applying wearing a light summer kimono known as a yukata. The background is a very light whitish ping with ground mica that gives it a lustrous sheen. On the shawl the white flowers and the green background of the shawl are marked with fine gauffrage – best described as embossing that gives those sections a three dimensional aspect. A fine Japanese mezzo tint print of lilies in a woven basket by Shigenu Narikawa, Shigenu (Japan, active, 1960 - 1990). Narikawa's art is well known in both Japan and the United States. One man exhibitions of his mezzotints have been held in Tokyo, Kyoto, Los Angeles, New York and Washington. He has also created original mezzotints for art publishers in both countries. This is one of our very favorite prints by Haku Maki – particularly because of the mixed media he employed in its execution. It would appear that Maki first made one of his innovative prints using his unique method of getting texture into a print by working the design in wet cement.
