This is a most unusual but quite handsome lacquer tray - we think it is probably Chinese in origin but cannot prove that. The design is a low relief design of a horse pulling a cart with what appears to be two passengers in it. The cart has a large fringed umbrella as a shade for the passengers. The shape of the horse and the two wheeled cart are what lead us to the conclusion that the tray is from China and probably dates to the mid 1920s to 1930s. The workmanship is excellent. The design appea ...click for details

A nice medium sized Japanese Oribe pottery bowl decorated with a very stylized drawing of a day lily in typical iron underglaze. The fluted edge makes a nice frame for the simplicity of the design. Surrounding the flower and leaves is the classic Oribe tan crackle glaze and thick dark green drip glazes. The back has six Kanji characters and some small areas where the tan glaze did not hold. It is not signed The bowl dates from the late Meiji period, 1890s–1930s. It measures 2 1/4 inches high ...click for details

An unusual viewing stone for the scholars desk made of a light tan stone with pink blotches on all sides. There are obvious took marks that make it clear that the stone was enhanced to bring out the contrasting colors. It comes in a small wooden stand – not very well made but it does give the stone solid stability. The stone measures 5” high by 4” wide by 1 ¼” thick and is in excellent condition. We believe it dates from the early 20th century.
