This is one of the more unusual Japanese studio vases we have ever come across. Clearly a hand thrown vase, it is decorated with a brilliant slightly matte finish rust/orange glaze. It is obvious that there were strips of tape or other masking material put on the body of the vase before applying the thick glaze - these were then stripped off after firing - thereby giving the strong vertical lines you see.
