An Unusual Artifact- Indonesia – Engraved Boar Skull
This is one of the most unusual items we have ever had in our collection. As you can see, it is the skull of a wild boar that is engraved with a face on the front of the skull. It was purchased from a man who had lived in Indonesia for many years, so I have no reason to doubt the story behind the skull.

The story goes that a small boy from a remote village was attacked and killed by a wild boar. The chief of the clan - who was also the boy’s father – spent weeks hunting down the boar and killing it. He then stripped it down to the skeleton and let the bones dry. After that he inscribed a face on the front of the skull to honor his son’s memory and to demonstrate that his killer had been found and killed. It is a likely story – and one that made me decide to own it because of its unique history and background.

The skull measures 9” high by 4” wide by 4” deep. It is in excellent condition and the incised face does have a haunting and poignant appearance. We believe it dates from the end of the 19th to early 20th century. A truly rare piece of a native artifact.
