This is a small lacquer dish with a design in gold makie on the top showing a koto, a set of pipes and a festival drum. There are also several gold makie maple leaves spaced around the top. The makie design is on a sold black roiro ground. The bottom of the dish is done in the negoro lacquer style - Negoro lacquer wares were produced at the Negoro-ji temple complex in Izumi province. The red layers of lacquer on Negoro wares are intended to gradually wear away with use, revealing the black lacquer underneath. This effect has since been copied and emulated elsewhere. The dish measures 4 ½” diameter and is 1 ½” deep. It is in excellent condition. We date it to the Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1925- 1950. |
