This is a quite old boxwood carving of a Chinese sage – we believe it dates from the 17th-18th century. The piece stands 6” tall by 3” wide by 1 ½” thick. The figure is missing its arms - there are some water stains on the piece – and there is a stable split partially down the upper part of the head and body - - yet, it still has a fascinating attractive appearance. The old gent has a long flowing beard and a pot belly – his legs are in a sarong type garment and his feet are bare. It is almost impossible for us to date the piece. Perhaps some scholar of Chinese costumes of the early Qing dynasty might be able to date it more precisely. |
