A Japanese Dark Brown Vase – Dragons - Meiji
This is a fascinating Japanese pottery vase with a dark brown - almost purple drip glaze. On opposite sides of the vase there are underglaze blue and white dragons drawn with fine details. Then, the potter used superb control by allowing the thick purple/brown overglaze to just reach the dragon designs and only slightly drip small sections onto the dragons underneath. This must have required a masterful control of glazing in the kiln to keep the dragons so visible.

The vase measures 11” high – and is 7 ½” diameter at its widest. There is signature on the base that translates as "Dai Nippon Seto" (right side line) and "Kato Shigeju Sei" (Sei is made). The vase is in very fine condition. However, there is a rim chip that is about 1” long by 1/4” wide at its widest – see photos. This could easily be covered up with a dark brown marking pen or shoe polish. We have left it as is to make sure the buyer sees the chip. We date the vase to the mid to late Meiji period, circa 1880s - 1900.
