| This is one of the largest Japanese sake bottles (tokkuri) we have ever seen or owned. This great large tokkuri stands a full 15 3/4" high and is 9 1/2" diameter at its widest. It is decorated overall in underglaze blue and white with the scrolling vines known as karakusa - a classic design element in Japanese ceramics. This fine old piece clearly dates from the early to mid Meiji period - circa 1870-1895. It has, unfortunately, been drilled for a lamp at one time so the base has a 1/2 " hole in it - and the top has been damaged but very nicely restored. I appreciate that the restorer did not try to hide the fact that the piece has been repaired by glazing over the repair with airbrush technique; but has, instead, left the repair lines to show. The repair is quite stable and adds to the fine character of the bottle. This one is a superb addition to any collection of Meiji ceramics or tokkuri. | |||||||||||
