A Beautiful Sandstone Head of a Lohan – 18th/19th Cty.
This handsome stone carving of the head of a lohan dates from the middle of the 18th to the early 18th century. It is mounted on a custom wooden stand - probably rosewood. We believe the stone to be sandstone. The head is in excellent condition – a tiny frit on the bottom lobe of the right ear is the only thing we could find. The carving is beautiful with the face of the lohan showing great wisdom and serenity. The head measures 2 ¼” high by 1 ½” deep by 1 ¼” wide. As mounted on its stand, it is 3 ½” high.

Lohans are well-known for their great wisdom, courage and supernatural power. The Arhat, Arahat or Arahant, translated into Chinese as Lohan, is one who has followed the Eightfold Path and has achieved deliverance of this earthly existence. He has reached "the other shore" and is saved for all eternity. In him the asavas - the craving for sensual pleasures, earthly existence, ignorance and wrong views - are gone. He is subject to no more rebirths and karma.
