A Japanese Woodblock Print of a Tiger/Leopard Hunt
This is a dynamic print portraying a tiger and a leopard running from a group of hunters armed with long spears. The action is quite vivid and the detail is excellent. The print is framed and matted – it appears to be in excellent condition – not laid down – not examined out of the frame.

The artist was Utagawa Yoshitsuya – see foot note. The print measures 19 “ by 14 “ framed and matted – the actual print is traditional oban size – 14” by 10”. It is signed and sealed. The following translation was provided by our friend and colleague, Edward Kawanabe of Sanai Antiques:

Artist : Ichieisai Yoshitsuya(1822-1866) Ga(painted or designed) Mountain logo type: with, Bun. Below is andaddress Yokoyama-cho, Tsujioka-ya(shop name) - 3-chome.

Utagawa Yoshitsuya , February 22, 1822 – August 2, 1866), also known as Kōko Yoshitsuya and as Ichieisai Yoshitsuya ,was a designer of ukiyo-e Japanese woodblock prints. Yoshitsuya was a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and, like his teacher, is best known for his woodblock prints of warriors. Yoshitsuya also produced many advertisements and designs for tattoos. Yoshitsuya’s students include Utagawa Kazutoyo (active c. 1862-70), Utagawa Yoshitoyo II (active c. 1862-77) and Yoshitsuya II (active c. 1870s).
