A Woodblock Print by Haku Maki – “Poem 70-85”
This fine print dates from 1970 and is one of several Poem prints mad by the Sōsaku hanga master, Haku Maki. The print measures 19 by 15” in the frame – the actual print measures 12” by 8 ½”. It is number 70/182 and features Maki’s signature, seal, and intaglio printing style. The print is in excellent condition – not examined out of the frame. The frame has one ¼” nick on the bottom edge.

Haku Maki specialized in mixed media. Blakemore in "Who's Who in Modern Japanese Prints" says - " Two unique qualities of a Maki print are the textures achieved by working the designs in wet cement and the use of Chinese characters as design motifs. The cement on which the designs are inscribed can be worked deeply and precisely, creating prints that look very different from those embossed through other processes." Maki passed away in 2000; as a result his prints are rapidly escalating in price and value as this talented artist will no longer be producing his unique work.

The Sōsaku hanga -"creative prints" - art movement in early 20th century Japan, during the Taishō and Shōwa periods advocated the principles of "self-drawn" - (jiga), "self-carved" -(jikoku) and "self-printed" -(jizuri), according to which the artist, with the desire of expressing the self, is the sole creator of art.
