| An excellent example of late Ming, ca. 1600, blue and white ceramics known as Swatow ware. In the classic reference book "Chinese Blue and White Ceramics" by S.T. Yeo and Jean Martin, Arts Oriental, 1978 - "Late Ming b&w were made in Kwangtung and Fukier provinces and commonly found in SE Asia and exported through the port of Swatow. This ware is heavily potted and boldly decorated with scrolls, dragons, phoenixes, etc.. - - the bases of "Swatow" wares are typically roughly finished and partially glazed, often with sand adhering." This deep dish has a series of dealers' labels on the back that provide a clear provenance back to Swedish dealer/collectors. The dish measures 10" in diameter and is 1 1/2" deep and is decorated with a crested crane and a peony in cavetto. There is a short 3/8" firing flaw on one rim and an early restoration of a chip on the rim. A nearly identical piece is illustrated on page 198 and 199 of the Yeo/Martin book. | |||||||||||||||
