This is a fine Oribe summer tea bowl - chawan - with the classic thick green glaze dripping over the sides of the bowl. The bowl is made of a light tan crackle finish glaze and has underglaze designs made with iron ink. There are what appear to be three Kanji characters on one side of the chawan – not translated. The chawan measures 6” diameter and is 2” high and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or hairlines. The foot and base are unglazed except for a large spot of the tan glaze in the center of the base. We date it to the late Meiji period, circa 1880s – 1910. |
