| Beautiful and simple Edo period Satsuma sake pouring cup with wooden lid. Decorated in the sparse mid-Edo period style that marks early Satsuma before the more highly decorated style was adopted to appeal to the Western market. Very fine crackle glaze with five kiku mons (the 16 petal imperial chrysthemum) as the only decoration - five in underglaze brown and two in the rare gosu blue. Not signed - as most Edo Satsuma pieces were not signed by the artist. The wooden top appears to be the original - as you can see, the tip that would cover the pouring spout has broken off at some early date. Measures 2 3/4" tall abd is 3" diameter at the widest - 4 1/2" if measured from the tip of the spout. Excellent condition except for the broken tip of the cover. | |||||||
