Repousse Copper Buddha Procession Plaque
A most unusual repousse copper plaque of a Buddha Procession. We date this from the late 1870's and believe it is probably from one of the Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia. This is based on the types of umbrellas carried by the attendants and the clothing - however it is basically a guess as we are not sure of the origin. What we do know for sure is that is is very well executed and composed. The piece is 8" wide x 6 3/4" high. It has a fine original patina and is is excellent condition. The scene portrays Buddha walking on a carpet that is being rolled out for him. He is surrounded by attendants, apsara (angels in flight) and animal musicians who are chasing away another deity. There are monkeys in the trees offering breadfruit - another indication of SE Asian origin. This piece would look great framed or hung as is.
