| Another great folk tiger - this one an eighteenth century wooden folk carving from Korea. The piece measures 10 1/2" high and is 9" wide. Very dynamic pose with the tiger looking up and back - very much the same pose as is frequently found in traditional Korean scrolls wherein the tiger is looking up at the scolding magpie located in a tree. An example of such a painting is included in photo # 8 below - taken from a website on Korean folk art - http://www.san-shin.org/Zo-05.html. The tiger has gilded eyes and the detailing on his body clearly portrays the strong musculature and even the hair of its fur. It was constructed of two separate blocks of wood - one can see the joint along the back where it has separated slightly - shown in the photos. Excellent condition with fine early patina - only the single stable crack along the joint lines. | |||||||||||
