| This piece is a bit of a mystery to us - it is obviously a very old piece - we estimate 18th to early 19th century at the latest. At first we believed it to be a ceremonial sword scabbard and hilt because the "sword" is just a wooden piece that holds the handle and scabbard together. Now, however, based upon a review of the item by several knowledgeable specialists in Beijing, we believe it is a piece for hanging on a wall or at a door to ward off evil spirits. The false sword inside was the actual "weapon", even as the whole thing is not for use but for hanging. The piece weighs two pounds so would have been much too unwieldy as a weapon holder. The total piece measures 23" long and is 3 1/4" wide at the widest part of the hilt. We are positive it is Chinese because the hand guard area of the hilt is a stylized Tao Tsai mask. Other interesting features are the light blue/celadon pooling in the creases and the snakeskin like faint modeling on the body of the scabbard. Excellent condition with just a couple of quite minor chip/abrasions. One of the most unusual and interesting ceramic items we have ever had. | |||||||||||||||
