| Rare Chinese Six Dynasties Mythical Creature - This very rare and strange looking creature was made some 1,500 years ago during the Six Dynasties period (AD 220 - 589). Made from a fine-grained grey earthenware, it is finely modeled with the surface having been "cold painted" in white, yellow-ochre, black and red pigments, much of which still remains. Presumably it represents some sort of mythical creature. It has a slightly sinister face that borders on wolverine appearance - yet the body is more bovine like an ox - probably just a potter's active imagination at work. Inside are faint traces of ancient plant/root growth. Length just over 7.5 inches (19.5 cm). The right ear is slightly chipped, but otherwise condition is excellent with no repairs or restoration. We are indebted to Brian Page of Brian Page Antiques, Brighton, Sussex, England for this identification and authentication. | |||||||||
