| Nuri Guri Natsume (tea caddy). Dating from the late Meiji period, circa 1880-1910, this fine tea caddy is made in the classic nuri guri red and black multi layer lacquer, It is 3 ¼” high – top is 2 ¾” diameter - base is 1 7/8” diameter – shoulder is 2 ¾” diameter. Nuri guri is the technique of laying down dozens of layers or lacquer - black-then red-then black again -- then carving through the layers in the intricate geometric pattern borrowed from the Chinese. The design is said to resemble the saddle pommel on early Mongolian horse saddles. The natsume is used to store the powdered green tea - sencha - used in the tea ceremony. The form - a rounded shoulder tapering down to a smaller base is a classic that can be found in lacquer, wood and ceramics. Condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or restorations. | |||||||||
