| A a Meiji Period Kutani Bowl with a very beautiful and interesting scene of two women with butterfly wings – probably portraying some Japanese myth however we have seem unable to track it down. Great characteristic Kutani colors of greens, golds, rust reds and blues. Sides are decorated with nishidike brocade panels and reserves with gamboling rabbits. The outer sides of the bowl with a band of red lappets in stylized palm fronds and blue karakusa vines. Excellent condition – measures 8 5/8” diameter at top, 3 1/2” diameter at base x 3 7/8” high. Dates from mid to late Meiji period - circa 1880-1900. Signed with two character Kutani mark on base - Kutani literally translates to KU- Nine - TANI -Mountains. - the area where the Kutani kilns were located, . | ||||||||||||||
