| An antique Edo period Japanese Buddhist carved wooden sculpture of the Bodhisattva Jizo, or Ksitigarbha in Sanskrit. About 150 to 200 years - old mid to late Edo period. Missing both of its hands, the statue is rather soiled from incense smoke overall and there is s white spot on the face. The robes are painted in a lovely pattern which is intact for the most part. The statue is a little loose on its base and the feet have separated from the legs - but can be easily reattached. The halo is firmly attached and is unusual for a Jizo. The statue is 10.4" high overall - Jizo is 6.3" high by himself. A very nice and authentic Edo piece. Ksitigarbha is the only Bodhisattva portrayed as a monk. In China, Ksitigarbha is known as Di-Tsang, in Japan as Jizo. Ksitigarbha is especially popular in Japan as the savior of the souls of dead children. | ||||||||||||
