Kutani Charger, Edo Pd. - 1820-1840 - Deer
A very early Kutani charger/bowl measuring 12 1/4" diameter at the top - is 2 1/8" deep and is 6" diameter at the base. Beautifully painted with two deer amongst plants and brilliant peonies with a volcano (Fuji ?) in the background. The painting is almost folk art in it's simplicity and freedom. (I particularly enjoy the green antlers in the standing deer on the right - obviously the artist had a touch of extra green enamel on his brush from the leaves above and decided that the deer might as well have green antlers as well ). On the back of the piece we find several loosely painted red cloud forms and the traditional fuku (good luck) mark in the center of the foot. We date this fine large shallow bowl to the late Edo period, circa 1820-40. Excellent condition with no chips or cracks or restorations.
