| A vintage Japanese Ryukyu lacquer circular box, black lacquer with gold pattern over on the cover. Lovely condition with no damage or repair, 4in diameter. We date this piece to the 1950s-60s. This style of Ryukyus (Okinawa)lacquer is known as Chinkin ware. Designs are carved with a Chinkin knife on the polished lacquer surface and lacquer is placed into the resulting grooves. Then, gold leaf or gold dust is pressed into these grooves before the lacquer dries. The gold brings brilliant lacquerware with peony and other Chinese plants or various patterns. | |||||||||
