Rare & Fine Pottery Tsuitate Scholars Screen
In all our years of collecting, we have only come across a couple of these small table screens for the scholars desk - known as Tsuitate. (The last one was saw was done in Hirado and that was 7-8 years ago). This handsome and strong pottery table screen is done in the Kakiemon palette and depicts polychrome chrysanthemums on a plain tan crackle glazed ground. Lovely in its stark simplicity - undoubtedly made for the Japanese market - and dating from the early to mid 19th century - the Late Edo period. One can see the slab molded technique used by the potter in creating this tsuituate and almost feel the potter's hand as he shaped and carved the piece. Excellent condition - measures 5 1/2" high x 6 1/2" long x 3" wide at the base.
