An Important- Edo Period - Japanese Blue & White Plate
This is one of the most beautiful and subtle Japanese blue and white plates in our collection. The design is a very low relief of two elephants and their handler. The scalloped border has a ring of small blue dots and more low relief design of hanging flowers at the rim. There are two areas of underglaze blue Kanji characters - probably a poem - and a blue Fuku (good fortune) mark on the base. The plate has some of the characteristic brownish spots from the early days of before they had perfected porcelains without such impurities - it also has the firing spurs on the base that were in use during the Edo period. We date the plate to the late 17th to mid 18th century. It measures 8 5/8" diameter and is 1 3/8" deep. Condition is superb with no cracks, chips or restorations.
