The copper alloy vase has a design of a goose flying past the moon - the feathers and the moon in inlaid silver and gold. The vase measures 4 ¼” high by 2” diameter at the shoulder. It is in excellent condition with some light wear. It is signed on the base – the characters translate to "Korai". We date the vase to the late Meiji period, circa 1880-1910. Shakudo is an alloy of gold and copper (typically 4% Gold, 96% Copper), mostly designed for its beautiful dark blue-purple patina. It doesn't have a name in most languages other than Japanese. It was widely used in Japan for the manufacture of katana fittings such as tsuba and yatate. |
