| A fine octagonal shape dish as used in the tea ceremony. The dish has an underglaze cobalt blue design of a group of five flowers growing out of marsh grasses. The border is framed with running design of flowers and leaves. On the back of the plate is a loosely drawn design of rounded designs – possibly intended to be stylized sunflowers. This back design is very similar to the backs of many Kraak dishes as photographed in the classic book, “Kraak Porcelain”, Renata Rinaldi, Bamboo Publishing, 1989. The foot is unglazed except where some glaze ran over the base. It measures 7” diameter and is 1” deep. The dish is in excellent condition with a few of the expected rim frits – the octagon is slightly misshapen giving it a folksy charm. We date the dish to the period of 1670s – 1750s. | ||||||||
