| Another in the wonderful series of Japanese Tea Bowls (chawan) done by the modern sosaku-hanga print artist, Haku Maki. This one is unusual in that the bowl portrayed has a brown pottery glaze and the calligraphy is different from the normal Kanji. The print measures 8 3/8" x 7 1/4" and is from an edition of 77 - it is entitled "Z-178" - mint condition. Haku Maki (b. 1924) specialized in mixed media. Blakemore in "Who's Who in Modern Japanese Prints" says - " Two unique qualities of a Maki print are the textures achieved by working the designs in wet cement and the use of Chinese characters as design motifs. The cement on which the designs are inscribed can be worked deeply and precisely, creating prints that look very different from those embossed through other processes." Maki passed away in 2000; as a result his prints are rapidly escalating in price and value as this talented artist will no longer be producing his unique work. | |||||||||
