| An absolutely superb miniature Yabu Meizan Satsuma cabinet vase. It measures 5" tall and is 2 1/2" diameter at the widest part of the shoulder. The top 25 % is decorated with highly intricate patterns of hanging wisteria - then there is a band of figures that is 1 1/4" wide - there are nineteen individual characters in this band engaged in a wide variety of activities - a bijin-ga showing a young girl how to pour tea - four young boys painting a bamboo design on a scroll - a young samurai showing his sword to friends - a woman sewing while her friend paints a scroll - two men practicing calligraphy while two young boys look on - fantastic detail as only the Meizan artists could accomplish. The bottom 40 % is filled with the most beautiful and detailed groups of flowers - simply breathtaking. A band of diamonds at the base completes the composition - then the classic Yabu Meizan raised gold mark is found in the center of the base. The only problem is a 3 inch long hairline that bisects the base and extends up one side. The crack has been totally stable since I purchased the vase about four years ago - and could, I believe, be permanently stabilized by any competent ceramics restorer. Despite the hairline crack, this is one of the finest Yabu Meizan pieces we have ever had in the collection. Without the hairline, this vase would easily command a price of $6,000 to $9,000 at any auction of Japanese ceramics. | |||||||||||||||
