A Chinese blue pottery brush rest made in the form of the character for the word mountain. These brush rests were used on the scholars desk to place his brushes whilst working on calligraphy or paintings. The form is also similar to the French Fleur de Lis figure. There are three peaks to the mountain and there are two identical Chinese characters on the two sides of the piece – we have not been able to translate them. The brush rest measures 3 ¼” high at the middle by 2 7/8” wide by 1” thick – it is in excellent condition with no chips or restorations. The ends and sides of the piece are glazed in a lovely soft blue. The base is unglazed other than a wash of clear glaze. From the wear on the rims of the base we believe the brush rest dates from the mid to late 19th century, Qing dynasty. |
