This is an example of the earliest Japanese cloisonné. It is interesting because of the shape – the top of the jarlet is a rounded square – which then merges into globular shape all the way to the bottom. The design is that of many small flowers surrounded by tiny tight cloisons – then the top has a design of white cloisons that form a drape of white lappets. The jarlet measures 4” in diameter at its widest and is 2 ¾” high. We date it to the early Meiji period, circa 1870s-1880s. These early pieces had many tiny cloisons – the small metal icicles that were used to keep the cloisonne in place – this is before the Japanese learned the way to have large expanses of the colored powered glass that, when heated, melted into a sold color. It is also possible to date it to the early period by looking at the many tiny pits in the material. |
