A large Japanese Satsuma koro (incense burner) decorated on one side with a profusion of big spider mums with attending large green leaves - a single dragonfly hovers overhead. On the other side are two more colorful dragonflies near a leaf of the plant. The cover to the cover has no overglaze decoration – just three heart shaped holes from which the incense smoke can emerge and a seated shi shi with gilt paint – some of which has worn off. The top rim of the koro is also gilded with some loss. The three legs are in the shape of mask faces – again with gilding that has some losses. The handle to the lower section of the koro has two handles shaped in the form of two shi shis looking up at the shi shi on the top of the finial. The koro measures 9” high and is 7” diameter at its widest. It is in fine condition with the exception of the losses to the gilding. The enamel overglaze flowers and dragonflies are in thick enamel and quite vivid in their colors. We date the koro to the Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1915-1930s. |
