A Meiji Period Bronze Koro – Three Scenes and a Shi Shi
A very well cast bronze koro with a slightly rounded flat base. The koro shows some very detailed hand chasing to get the clearly defined scenes shown. There are three separate scenes in reserves and the rest of the body design in made up of Greek Key design. The first scene is that of a pagoda and a temple high on a mountain or tall hills. A second scene shows a seated elder holding a gourd in his hand – he sits under a spreading prunus (plum) tree. The third scene is of a spreading prunus tree, which stands above a man in a boat and another man on the shore walking with an umbrella. The finial is a quite detailed figure of a seated shi shi and the three handles are in cloud form.

The koro measures 5” high to the top of the finial and is 5” diameter at its widest. It is in excellent condition with fine patina and several spots of verdi gris on the base. We date it to the early Meiji period, circa 1870-1880s – it could well be even older.
