A Dainty Imari Shallow Bowl with a Complex Design – Edo
This is a charming little shallow bowl/dish with a complex design. The outer rim has a scalloped edge. The center reserve shows a three-clawed dragon curled around itself and partly hidden by blue clouds. There is a very nice complimentary pallet of colors used in the design - red, orange dark cobalt blue, yellow, pale blue and light green. Surrounding the central dragon are four reserves with smaller designs of dragons and four reserves of a yellow design surrounded by dark blue karakusa vines and pale green flowers. The border is mainly a geometric design of orange flowers and green, pale blue and cobalt blue vines. On the back of the piece is a band of karakusa vines in cobalt blue. There are chatter marks on the inside of the bottom of the low foot that show that is was wheel thrown. All of the designs are clearly hand painted. The dish/bowl measures 6” diameter and is 1 ¼” deep at the rim. It is not signed and is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. We believe the piece dates from the late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1850-1880s.
