This is an interesting shape for a Mokuzuke dish - (Mokuzuke were used to serve food during a formal tea gathering) - in a shape reminiscent of a pear or a leaf. This Kutani dish is decorated in an underglaze blue with a three-petal flower and a large leaf with gradually smaller sizes. On the right side of the dish is a geometric design in low relief with a white on white motif. The rim of the dish is lightly scalloped and is painted with an overglaze golden brown enamel line. The underside has designs of a leaf on the side and of the sacred pearl (tamba) on the two ends. On the base of the dish is a three character mark in red Kanji that translates as "Kutani Zo - made)". The dish measures 7 ¼” long by 4” wide by 1” high at the rim. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. We date it to the Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1925-1940s. It is possible it could date as far back as the late Meiji period, 1890-1915. |
