This is a beautiful example of early Japanese cloisonne work early Meiji period, circa 1870s. The scene is a very detailed and colorful one of a sky dragon over a landscape with hills and mountains and pagodas and huts in nearby villages. There is also a large body of water – probably a lake – with the classic Japanese stylized white-capped waves. In the background we find a gorgeous rendition of the revered Mt. Fuji with brilliant whites for the snowy cap. The dragon is multi-colored grays, near blacks and a pink underbelly – it has a fierce visage and is surrounded by clouds. The center scene of the dragon and Mt. Fuji is set in a reserve in the center of the charger. Around the sides is a design karakusa vines and some light red and white flowers. The back of the charger is a light turquoise color with tight circular cloisons - at four sides are tiny flowers. The foot is not enameled and shows the underlying metal on which the enamel was fired. . While the chargers is early, the enamels and workmanship are outstanding. Condition is excellent, with only the minor pitting which is not uncommon on cloisonne pieces from this period. The charger – actually a low bowl – measures 11 7/8” diameter and is 2 ¼” deep at the rim. We date it to the 1970s when Japanese cloisonne of quality was just starting to be made. A clearly fine addition to any collection of Japanese cloisonne with its intricate and lovely design. |
