This is a gorgeous studio bowl in the modern Japanese style by a renowned third generation Japanese potter in the San Francisco area, Kimi Masui. It was purchased at an exhibit of modern Japanese potters at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco back when it was still located in Golden Gate Park. The inner side of the bowl has a fantastic blend of colors - streaky whites, then purples to grays to lavenders all culminating in a pool of soft turquoise green that makes you feel like you are looking into a deep pool of Caribbean waters. The back of the bowl has a dark purple rim and then shades into a solid crackle glaze in of turquoise. The base is unglazed and the interior of the rim has the artists signature Masui and the date 1994. The bowl measures 5 Ύ diameter and is 2 high. It is in perfect condition with no chips or cracks. A real masterwork of modern Japanese studio pottery. This is what Masui has to say about herself I was born a Sansei (third-generation Japanese-American) and raised in a traditional family in Lodi, California. My appreciation for everyday objects that are both pleasing and utilitarian is bound to my heritage and the pieces my parents chose to decorate and use in our home. My work integrates these influences and reflects an East/West aesthetic. All of my pieces are hand-thrown porcelain and glazed with formulas that I have developed over my three-decade career. My work has been purchased for homes and collections throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia and is sold in museum gift shops, galleries, and art shows. The solitary process of working with clay has rewarded me with an experience of peace and centering. Dealing with the unpredictability of clay and fire has developed a patience and quiet strength that is evident in my compelling colors and elegant forms. I strive to impart these qualities and the joy of using a piece of art into the lives of those who use my vessels everyday. |
