| This is a rather unusual figure of Daruma in that the background clay on the face, chest and hands is the chocolate brown color of Bizen pottery - yet the robe and scepter are done in a thin overglaze enamel in a dirty white color with tan and brown highlights. The Daruma has a particularly piercing look to his face as if he were mad about something. The figure measures 9” high by 4” wide by 3” deep. There is no signature – the base in not glazed and has the impression of cheesecloth that it stood on whilst drying. It is in excellent condition – some light rubbing to the white/tan glaze – no chips or cracks. We date it to the late Meiji to Taisho period, circa 1915-1920s. | |||||||||||
