This is a Japanese woodblock print by Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950), entitled “Toshogu Shrine”, 1937. This design is illustrated at plate 233, The Complete Woodblock Prints of Yoshida Hiroshi, Abe Publishing Co., Ltd.,(Tokyo, 1987). We have not examined the print out of the print so do not know if it is pencil signed or whether it carries the jizuri mark indicating that it was printed under the supervision of Yoshida himself. This print is in excellent condition, with fine vivid colors and excellent registration. The image measures approximately 15 ¼” by 10 ¼”. Framed it measures 21” by 15 7/8”. There are some pencil notations on the back of the print made by some previous owner telling about when and where he purchased the print. Hiroshi Yoshida(1876-1950) was a 20th century Japanese painter and woodblock print maker. He is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the shin hanga style, and is known especially for his excellent landscape prints. Tōshō-gū is any Shinto shrine in which Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the last shogunate of Japan, is enshrined with the name Tōshō Daigongen. Tōshō-gū shrines are found throughout Japan. The most famous Tōshō-gū is located in Nikkō in Tochigi Prefecture and is the one shown here by Yoshida.
